Chris Volpe
Originally from Long Island, Chris Volpe is an artist, writer, and teacher working and living in New Hampshire. Chris approaches painting as a three-way conversation among sheer joy in the medium, the
challenge of seeing and responding to the world in a fresh, spontaneous way, and the history and traditions of western art.
His work draws upon 19th-century landscape traditions, such as Barbizon and Tonalism, yet extends to abstraction through a contemporary sensibility. His work is collected internationally and held in the permanent collections of Smith College and the Whistler House Museum. Grants and awards include the Saint Botolph Club Foundation, MassMoCA/Assets for Artists, and the NH State Council on the Arts Artist Advancement Grant. With degrees from the University of New Hampshire and Stony Brook University, he has taught painting, literature, mythology, and the history of art at various colleges and universities. Chris writes regularly about art and artists both online and off.
